The last phase of the three million euro contract begins on Monday, which aims to improve access to the Viana do Castelo seaport, with the construction of a new roundabout in Cabedelo.

In a statement sent to Lusa, the Viana do Castelo City Council affirms that the project aims to “attract new economic activities to the area of ​​influence of Porto, reduce the operating costs inherent to the connection times of the highway in Porto to the main centers of activity, reduce noise and pollutant emissions, increase traffic safety and help decongest road traffic, eliminating heavy traffic from urban roads “.

The municipality warns that the works will require traffic conditioning on Monday and Tuesday to cut down some two dozen of the 170 trees (bananas) on the avenue.

“The technical intervention that will be carried out will preserve a slice of the trunk of each one of the sacrificed specimens, elements of relevant scientific and educational value, taking into account that the annual variations of the climate, existence of pests and diseases can be studied in detail. , wind regime, growth configuration and incidents such as the occurrence of fires ”, explains the text.

With the aim of “minimizing the impact” of this tree felling, the municipality plans to invest 30 thousand euros in the planting of 200 native resinous and leafy trees with a large carbon reserve capacity, such as maritime pine and cork oak. over the next two years in various areas of Cabedelo.

The objective of this action “is to restore, but also to reinforce, the CO2 sequestration capacity in that territory and also contribute to the improvement of the landscape, climatic comfort and the places that can be enjoyed”

The contract for the new roundabout will allow access to the new 8.8 km long highway that connects highway 28 with the port of Viana do Castelo in São Romão de Neiva, with two 3.5 meter wide lanes.

The work also includes the requalification of a section and shoulders of the National Highway (EN) 13 and the construction of two new sections that connect this national highway with the A28, with direct access to the commercial port.

The new route is intended to decongest urban roads for heavy vehicle traffic, eliminating heavy traffic to and from the interior of the Darque parish to and from the seaport.
