The 5G auction appears to be generating great interest from new players in the Portuguese market. Then, on the first day of tenders, reserved precisely for new entrants, the four competing lots had generated six rounds with a final price of 49 million euros, this Wednesday the trend was repeated and the values rose above the table by 60 million euros.

In total, on the second day, there were six more new rounds for the allocation of four lots in the 900 MHz and 1800 MHz bands. In the case of the first category, (900 MHz) a lot is being tendered with a price of reserve of 30 million. euros. Although 12 rounds have already been run for this lot allocation, the base value remains the same.

In the case of the three lots in the 1800 MHz band, which had a reserve price of four million, the price continues to rise. After closing yesterday at 6.4 million euros, this Tuesday it rose to 10.4 million – 31.2 million in total lots.

Taking into account the public information about the auction, published on the Anacom website, it is not possible to understand whether the award of any of the lots has been completed or not. Otherwise, bids should only resume on January 4, when Anacom plans to publish more information about the auction. According to Anacom’s calendar, it was expected that between December 24 and 31 there would be no bidding round.

The final price of the State berthing with these auctions, which in addition to the 5G mobile service also intends to increase the coverage of the current 4G networks, will depend on whether all the lots are assigned or not, as well as whether they are purchased at the base price. But Anacom estimates point to revenues of at least 237.9 million euros. A value that, taking into account the competitiveness that is being produced, may be higher.

Only once the first phase of the auction reserved for new entrants is finished, does the second phase begin for current operators (Meo, Nos and Vodafone).
