The purchase of bicycles should have greater support from the Environmental Fund and more incentives in the next State Budgets, defend the Zero and MUBI associations in a statement released today.

The incentives to support active mobility provided for in the Budget for 2021 “should be more attractive,” says in the statement of the environmental association Zero and the association for urban mobility by bicycles, MUBI, established in 2009 and whose mission is to help create conditions of use of the bicycle.

The two associations propose that the incentives for the purchase of conventional bicycles should be 50%, with an increase in the maximum limit to 200 euros and a total of 5,000 bicycles. In relation to bicycles with electric assistance, the incentives must remain at 50%, with an increase in the maximum limit to 500 euros and one for a total of 5,000 bicycles.

The incentives in 2020 for the purchase of a conventional bicycle (without electric assistance) are 10%, up to a maximum of 100 euros, and for an electric bicycle they are 50%, with a limit of 350 euros.

“Doing the calculations, to take advantage of the incentive of 100 euros (when buying a conventional bicycle), it is necessary to spend 1,000 euros, which allows you to choose to buy an electric bicycle and obtain a much greater incentive,” the statement warns. .

Zero and MUPI also suggest increased incentives for cargo bikes and support for the repair of up to 50,000 bikes.

The two associations praise the initiative, which is already continuing for the fourth consecutive year, to encourage the purchase of vehicles with low gas emissions and more environmentally friendly vehicles, be they bicycles or other electric vehicles, in line with the plans and strategies of the State for sustainable urban mobility.

And they recall that the Assembly of the Republic recently presented proposals for recommendations to the Government to support and promote these forms of displacement, after the covid-19 pandemic.

In Italy, the Government created a “bonus bike”, which reimburses up to 60% of the cost of a bicycle, up to a maximum of 500 euros, the United Kingdom pays up to 55 euros for the repair of bicycles and France has made 60 available millions of euros. to encourage the use of bicycles.

The examples are of the two associations, which add that in Portugal the Lisbon City Council made available three million euros to support the purchase of bicycles, which is almost 10 times higher than what the Environmental Fund has for the whole country.

Both conclude that if the Government assumes a strong investment in strengthening active mobility solutions in cities, the State Budgets for 2021 should reflect this desire. And the government, they also say, should quickly launch a program to encourage commuting to home work by bicycle, as is already the case in other European countries.
