The 36 wagons purchased in Spain that contain asbestos will be decontaminated in December, CP guarantees, as the Infrastructure Minister said today.

“Since the purchase from RENFE, CP has assumed the existence of asbestos in some of the coaches. Of the 36, at the moment 12 are asbestos-free and certified, 2 are in the decontamination phase and the 36 will be clean by December, ”Pedro Nuno Santos wrote today on social networks, citing a clarification from CP, a company under his tutelage .

“The company that is doing this decontamination work is certified and authorized by ACT. Decontamination is being carried out in a perfectly segregated area of ​​the Rolling Stock Repair Workshop and all the wagons are previously confined ”, he adds.

“For each car, after decontamination, the following is issued: – a measurement report of the concentration of fibers suspended in the air by a Specialized Laboratory in the control of Fibers; – Certificate free of asbestos for transport by the company responsible for decontamination ”, according to the public company.

The Galician newspaper “La Voz de Galicia” said this week that the 36 wagons of the 2000 series, known as Arco, that CP bought from the Spanish RENFE for 1.65 million euros precisely because they contain asbestos.

Renfe, for its part, told Lusa that one of the conditions of the contract for the sale of the wagons was the removal of asbestos, to be carried out in Portugal.
