The general nurses’ strike called by the Democratic Union of Nurses of Portugal (Sindepor) takes place between November 9 and 13, throughout the country, with the exception of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, the union announced today.

“Sindepor called a general strike for the second week of November, from 9 to 13, which will cover the entire country. Madeira is excluded, ”said the union’s president, Carlos Ramalho, at a press conference in Évora.

Carlos Ramalho indicated that the strike does not occur in Madeira because the Regional Government “has always shown a very open and negotiating capacity” and established agreements with the union to “try to overcome the problems.”

Regarding the strike, the union leader said that “nurses are extremely dissatisfied” with the current professional situation and that, with the COVID-19 pandemic, the problems of these professionals worsened.

“The response capacity is very limited and the nurses are extremely exhausted. In the first phase [da pandemia]It was already complicated for the National Health Service (SNS) and the nurses and now it is even more complicated ”, he said.

According to the president of Sindepor, the union demands the thawing of career progressions, the attribution of risk subsidies to all nurses and, being “a profession of speedy”, retirement at 57 years of age.

The leader of this union pointed out that the nurses had great ambitions in relation to the new career, which, he defended, “turned out to be a fallacy, because it was an imposition of the Government and did not contribute anything new.”

Carlos Ramalho stressed that “the vast majority” of nurses who are being hired by the NHS are left with “four-month contracts”, considering that “contracts without term give guarantees” to professionals.

Asked about the possible limitations in the health units caused by the strike in times of the covid-19 pandemic, the president of Sindepor said that he understands that there is “some discomfort” in the population, but he guaranteed that the strike will occur “to harm the population “. possible ”users.

“What we intend to do is give a signal to the Ministry of Health and the Government that the nurses are unhappy and that they need to take a closer look at the class,” he concluded.
