A 19-year-old girl from Algeria, known as Chaima, was kidnapped, raped and murdered by a man she had complained about three years ago for rape.
The young woman’s body was found burned in abandoned fuel pumps in Boumerdes, an Algerian province. Chaima was kidnapped a few days before the body was found.
According to authorities, abortion pills and a can of gasoline were found at the crime scene. The local press reports that the crime could have been perpetuated to hide a previous sexual abuse that left the victim pregnant. The young woman was reportedly stabbed before being burned alive.
Chaima’s family broadcast on video the tragic story of the young woman in which the family asks for the death penalty for the suspect who has already served three years in prison for sexual assault on the victim. The man was an acquaintance of the family.
The Chaima case has generated a lot of outrage in the country and on social media. Many use the Chaima case to alert the government to the need to act against the problem of gender-based sexual violence in the country, including calling for the return of the death penalty to the Algerian justice system.
The “I am Chaima” movement was created, which already has many followers, with several texts on social networks and mobilizes people to the streets to fight against sexual violence.
