A total of 139,000 people will be vaccinated in Portugal at the end of January. At the end of December, 9,750 health professionals will be vaccinated, who will be the first to receive the vaccine in Portugal. Then, in January, about 130,000 people will be vaccinated.

Of these 139 thousand people, 118 thousand correspond to residents and professionals in Residential Structures for the Elderly (ERPI) and 21 thousand health professionals.

“The information that we have and that the first vaccines will arrive in Portugal on December 24 or 26, we will be able to start vaccination. The agreement in European terms and all member states will begin between December 27 and 29 ”, said today the leader of the working group for the Covid-19 vaccination plan.

The working group for the Covid-19 vaccination plan points out that professionals from hospital centers in Central Lisbon and São João in Porto will be among the first to receive the vaccine.

“We will be able to start vaccination at that time, in a limited way, the number of doses is 9,750, in this last week of the year we will vaccinate only health professionals, one of the indicated priority groups, we must protect those who protect us” , said. Francisco Ramos speaking with journalists at Infarmed in Lisbon.

“On January 5 we will receive another 300 thousand doses, during the month of January we will be able to vaccinate about 120 thousand people in homes and their professionals, and a total of about 20 thousand health professionals,” he explained.

As the official said today, the “difference in numbers between 300,000 doses and 140,000 professionals is explained because we will immediately save a dose for the second dose of all the people who start vaccination to ensure that it will be available for that to happen.”

In total, at the end of April, the first phase of this plan foresees the vaccination of 950 thousand people in Portugal: 250 thousand health professionals residing in homes and similar institutions, and professionals and hospitalized in long-term care units; 300 thousand health professionals directly involved in patient care; professionals from the armed forces, security forces and critical services; 400 thousand people aged 50 years and over, with at least one of the following pathologies: heart failure, coronary heart disease, kidney failure (GFR <60ml / min), COPD or chronic respiratory disease on ventilatory support and / or long-term oxygen therapy.

By the end of the first quarter of 2021, Portugal should receive a total of 1,229 million vaccines from BioNTech / Pfizer, less 246,000 doses than originally planned.

In the case of Moderna’s vaccine, 227 thousand vaccines are already planned. As for the Astrazeneca vaccine, Portugal may receive 1.4 million vaccines, but this number has not yet been confirmed by the company.

Regarding the dates of the European authorizations, the data provided by the working group indicates that in the case of the Biontech / Pfizer vaccine, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) will issue its opinion on December 21, being the European Commission until December 23.

In the case of Moderna’s vaccine, EMA is expected to make its opinion known on January 12

For the remaining vaccines, there are no dates yet available for EMA and European Commission authorization for the AstraZeneca / Oxford, Janssen / Johnson & Johnson, Curevac vaccines. Sanofi’s vaccine no longer counts for testing in 2021.
