US President Donald Trump, who is in hospital after testing positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus, told his friend and lawyer Rudy Giuliani that he will “beat” the coronavirus, the New York Post reported.

The New York Post says Trump called Giuliani on Saturday to assure him he’s okay, following a cautious assessment by the White House chief of staff.

Trump told Giuliani by phone: “I feel like I could get out of here right now. I’ve been told that there can always be a setback with this disease, but I feel like I could go out and have a rally.”

Trump also explained that he continued to engage in high-risk activities despite the pandemic, because he is the “President of the United States.”

“I can’t lock myself in a room … I had to confront (the virus) so that the American people would stop being afraid of it so that we could deal with it responsibly,” Trump said.

According to the newspaper, Trump also said he hoped that, by beating the virus, “he could show people that we can deal with this disease in a responsible way, but we should not be afraid of it.”

Chief of Staff Mark Meadows said Donald Trump went through a period “very worrying” Friday and that the the next 48 hours “will be critical” for the recovery of the American president.

On Friday Donald Trump, 74, announced on his personal page on the social network Twitter that, like the first lady, Melania, he had tested positive for coronavirus and would be in quarantine.

Hours later, he was admitted as a precautionary measure to the Walter Reed Military Hospital.

Meanwhile, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie announced on Twitter that he was admitted to a hospital, hours after confirming that he had tested positive for the coronavirus.

Christie says that after seeing her doctors Saturday afternoon, she went to Morristown Medical Center.

He added that he has mild symptoms, but due to his history of asthma, he decided “this is an important precautionary measure.”

Christie is the latest in a series of diagnosed covid-19 cases linked to President Donald Trump’s inner circle.

Trump’s former 2016 rival told the Associated Press on Friday that the last time he was with the president was Tuesday during preparations for his debate with former Vice President Joe Biden in Cleveland. He added that he had tested negative that day.
