Pokemon Go Fest 2020 guide: schedule, rotating habitats and more

Pokemon Go Fest 2020 is officially here. The annual Pokemon celebration returns this weekend, July 25-26, and will be very different from previous years. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Niantic is making major changes to the annual live event to make it a global affair, reworking many aspects of the experience, and even introducing new elements such as virtual habitat rotation. To catch up, we’ve rounded up everything you need to know about Pokemon Go Fest 2020 below.

Pokemon Go Fest Tickets

Unlike previous Pokemon Go Fests, this year’s event will be open to players from around the world, so anyone can participate in the festivities as long as they have a ticket. Those can be purchased through the Pokemon Go in-game store for $ 15 and grant holders access to both days of the event.

Start time

Pokemon Go Fest 2020 will take place over two days: Saturday, July 25 and Sunday, July 26. The event will last 10 hours each day, from 10 am to 8 pm local time.

Virtual rooms

In lieu of the training rooms normally found at Pokemon Go events, Niantic will host an online “virtual room”. Here, you can interact with other players on your team, participate in giveaways, track live updates, watch interviews with the developers of Pokemon Go, and more. Niantic says it won’t be limited to interacting with its own team’s players, though the studio teases that there will be some “team-specific fun things” to do in their team’s room.

Global challenges and ultra unlocks

As in previous years, Niantic will offer a variety of challenges during Pokemon Go Fest 2020. Players around the world will work together to complete these tasks and, depending on how many milestones are reached, they will unlock different rewards in the game. There will be 32 challenges in total on the first day of Go Fest, and every eight that are completed will unlock a week-long Ultra Unlock event focused on certain types of Pokemon.

New Mythical Pokémon

Day 1 of the event will also feature its own series of story-based challenges to complete. Professor Willow is following the trail of a new Mythical Pokémon, and you can help him learn more about the mysterious monster by completing challenges on July 25. Niantic hasn’t shared any clues as to who the new Mythical Pokemon is, but the recent Pokemon Presents video presentation featured a Victini silhouette during a segment of the event, but confirming that it is the new Pokemon in question.

Rotating habitats

To replicate the feeling of exploring a new area, Niantic introduces a new game element for Pokemon Go Fest 2020: habitats. These virtual environments will rotate every hour and host certain types of Pokémon. There will be five different habitats in total: fire, water, grass, battle, and friendship.

Each habitat will also present its own set of global themed challenges. There will be different challenges available every hour, and if players can complete them before time expires, they will unlock special bonuses for the rest of the hour, encouraging players to work together and complete the challenges as quickly as possible. You’ll be able to unlock individual rewards by completing these challenges as well, including exclusive in-game stickers.

Habitats will rotate according to the following schedule:

  • 10 AM ET – Battle Habitat
  • 11 AM ET – Habitat of Friendship
  • 12 pm ET – Fire Habitat
  • 1 PM ET / 10 AM PT – Water habitat
  • 2 PM ET / 11 AM PT – Grass Habitat
