Lauryn Hill’s daughter Selah Marley talks about painful childhood trauma.
In a two-hour Instagram video – in which Marley dissents her own behavior in relationships – the 21-year-old also talked about her childhood with her “very angry” singing mother, of the Fugees girl, who she claims to be her disciplined by whipping them with straps, describes it as “some slave-owner s ***.” Meanwhile, she speaks of her father, Rohan Marley, a very absent father.
Marley has since spoken out and made it clear that the video was part of a “larger conversation” about “trauma I experienced due to a lack of unity in the household,” because Hill and Rohan’s relationship was on-and-off back then. ” t they five children paired together. She said the now-defunct video was not an invitation to “bash my parents – especially my father. I never said I did not like her. I said her shortcomings created trauma which I now have to be aware of and active in.” healed. ”
Yahoo Entertainment has reached out to a rep for Hill, 45, and will update this story as we get a response.
In the video, Marley discusses a failed romantic relationship of her own, which leads her to bring up her own “backstory” about her childhood.
“When I was younger, Mom, just like her parents, would break us up,” she said. “[Hill] was just very angry. She was so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so angry. She was literally unreachable. Not easy to talk to. And half the time I did not live with her, I lived half with my grandparents. She was very angry. ”
Marley talks about getting ‘disciplined’ into Hill’s hands, interrupting her own story to just say about the discussion was the ‘trauma back’ in her head. She did back that Hill told her, ” Go get the belt. ‘That’s how you know you’re in trouble … You’re going to walk to your doom – it’s like walking to your death. And my mom is a great woman, but, um, she obviously did not do everything right. ”
Marley went on to do what she said her mother did to hit her with a belt or “switch,” and said Hill “would hold our hands” in the air “if she hit us.” She recalls “running in circles” when she was beaten, “screaming and crying.”
She said the sound of the belt hitting her during the re-introduction “just traumatized me”.
Marley said her mother would then tell her to “repair your face again and again” and would continue with “constant threats.”
She said it got “the belt” “slave s ***. It was some slave s ***. All black parents sat on that slave owner. ‘
She said Hill and her parents would fight too, saying, “That I did not see much peace.”
Marley said that Hill was “of her rocker” from Marley’s young years until she was 10. She made the point that Hill then “changed. She’s not like that anymore. I’m very proud of her. Very, very proud of has. ”
And Marley said she always felt for Hill in the midst of the trauma because she juggled a lot.
“She’s Lauryn Hill,” she said. ‘She is being attacked by the media. She also went through her own s ***. She had five children with a husband that – they did not really know each other. That they always stood to argue, always fight. ”
Marley talks more about her parents’ relationship, saying Hill would “cry over my dad” or fight with him. She reminds herself that on many occasions she was the only child who was awake, only crying in her room in the middle of the fights.
“I don’t think she realizes how much that has affected me,” she said.
Marley also talks about her father’s role in it. She once remembered when she was 10 her mother was constantly texting Rohan during a quarrel. Afterwards she asked herself, “Where is my father?” She said Rohan, son of Bob Marley, “just wasn’t,” leaving a “void.”
She added that she did not even compare ‘so bad’ of Hill compared to her older brother, Zion, who said that Hill ‘projected’ her anger on Rohan.
After the video went viral, Marely spoke out, saying she was not happy with the way her comments were treated in the media. She specifically called out the Shade Room to snap her alone and chat about her father. In a post, she explained her comments.
“Jesus Christ,” she wrote. ‘The discussion I had was a larger conversation about a particular trauma I experienced due to a lack of unity in the household. This is nothing new. This is common for many people & I’m glad so many of you were about to resonate with the healing I’m talking about. But please do not please my parents at the moment – especially my father. I never said I did not like him. I said that their shortcomings created trauma which I now consciously and actively need to heal from. ”
In the wake of his daughter’s comments, Rohan shared family photos, including some shared by his other children.
Marley deleted the video and made a live video and talks more about the topic.
Hill’s superstardom in the ’90s with The Fugees, one of the most famous hip-hop groups, and their solo album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill had record-breaking sales. However, she was associated with drama, fights with The Fugees (and personal drama with Wyclef Jean), unpaid taxes that led to a three-month prison sentence, claims she stole music and, in later years, was late for shows. She has also been largely inclusive.
Hill’s relationship with Rohan ended in 2011, which became public only because she welcomed a sixth child and publicly denied that it was Rohan’s child.
