Planet Fitness will require face masks inside gyms starting in August


Planet Fitness announced Tuesday that anyone exercising in its gyms must wear a face mask at all times beginning August 1.

The mandate will take effect at all 1,450 company locations in North America and Australia that are open to the public. According to company policy, all Planet Fitness employees must also wear masks.

“Gyms are part of the solution and a key element of the healthcare delivery system as they provide much-needed access for people to exercise and stay healthy,” said Planet Fitness CEO Chris Rondeau. “Given our leadership position within the industry, we believe it is our responsibility to further protect our members, employees and communities so that we can all safely focus on our health, which is more important now than ever before.”

All company locations will be equipped with disposable masks for members or guests who do not have one, in accordance with company policy.

If a member has a medical exemption that prevents them from wearing a mask or simply prefers not to wear it, the company will freeze their membership “until such time as we no longer need masks in our clubs at all times,” Planet Fitness Policy Readings.

The move comes when a new round of cases breaks out in parts of the United States. As a result, a large number of retailers from Home Depot, CVS, and Costco to Starbucks have issued mandates for their customers to cover themselves while in-store.

While many companies have required associates to wear masks during their shifts, depending on state or local mandates, clients may not have been previously required to do so.

The number of confirmed cases in the US has exceeded 4.2 million, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
