Charging the phone, which was once an annoying ritual that seemed like an eternity, is now much less complicated. Most new phones charge from 0 to 100 percent in less than two hours, but China’s Oppo has been pushing it further. Last year it launched a smartphone with a 65W charge that can be fully charged in less than 30 minutes.
Now Oppo is back with new improvements. The company said it would launch a 125W load on July 15 and shared a brief teaser on Twitter.
No further details have been shared, but Oppo is not the only company working on super fast charging. China’s iQOO (a sub-brand of smartphone maker Vivo) has announced a new 120W charging technology that can fully charge a phone with a 4,000 mAh battery in 15 minutes.
IQOO was also a step further than Oppo, by posting a demo of the technology on China’s Weibo social network.
In the video, we see that a phone fully charges in just under 15 minutes. Even more impressive, the phone charges 0 to 50 percent in just five minutes and 0 to 80 percent in less than 10 minutes. That last 20 percent is always the most difficult, but in many cases, you don’t really need them. With a phone like this, you will often need to plug it in for a few minutes to get a full day of battery life.
We’ve seen similar demos before, but the Android Authority says iQOO has confirmed that this technology is ready for mass production, with more details next month.
It is not known whether fast charging leads to faster battery degradation or overheating, but we have not heard of widespread problems with previous Oppo or iQOO smartphones.
