YouTube begins fact-finding searches in the US USA

YouTube announced today that it will begin providing fact check search queries in the US. USA The video giant had previously launched the feature in Brazil and India last year, but today is the first time the feature has been implemented in the United States.

When you search for a potentially false news or claim on YouTube, you will now see a blue box labeled “Independent Fact Check” with a link to relevant information about the search results. The box specifies the claim that is made and tells you if it is true or false.

The information box will only appear if a “relevant fact check article is available from an eligible publisher”. The company also clarifies that search queries should be specific enough to trigger a fact check. “For example, if someone searches for” a tornado hit Los Angeles, “they might see a relevant fact-check article, but if they search for a more general query like” tornado, “they may not, YouTube says in a blog post.

YouTube says more than a dozen American publishers are currently participating, including The Dispatch, FactCheck.org, PolitiFact, and The Washington Post Fact Checker. Any publisher is welcome to contribute “as long as it meets the publicly available Claims Review standards and is a verified signer of the International Fact Check Network (IFCN) Code of Principles or a authorized publisher. “

As misinformation continues to spread rampant across the web, especially in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, social media has increasingly turned to integrated fact-checking services to make sure users don’t get sidetracked. Facebook, for example, has been doing it since it faced reaction to wrong information during the 2016 elections.

YouTube says it will take time for the system to run at full speed, and that it will roll out the feature in more countries as its algorithms become more precise.
