MANILA, Philippines – The sin of the policeman who shot and killed a mother and her son in Tarlac is not the sin of the entire Philippine National Police (PNP), Interior Secretary Eduardo Año said Monday.
In a statement Monday, Año said the shooting incident that killed Sonya Gregorio, 52, and her son Frank Anthony Gregorio, 25, in the town of Paniqui on Sunday is an “unfortunate but isolated incident.” .
“While there are unfortunate incidents like this, the vast majority of our PNP staff perform their sworn duties every day with honor and integrity to protect and serve the people,” Year said.
“Nuezca’s sin is not the sin of the entire Philippine National Police. As we have seen during this pandemic, they put their own lives on the forefront in our COVID response, ”he added, referring to Sergeant Major Jonel Nuezca, who is the suspect in the crime.
However, Año said that the Ministry of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) condemned the shooting incident that involved Nuezca.
He said the suspect, who turned himself in to police Sunday night, has already been disarmed.
The investigation into the incident has already begun, according to Year.
“The formal investigation of the incident has begun and we assure the family and the public that the PNP and the National Police Commission will conduct a thorough, impartial and prompt investigation,” said the Head of the Interior.
“The DILG will ensure that justice is done to the victims’ families and that administrative and criminal cases are brought against Nuezca. We do not and will never tolerate such acts and we will ensure that they are held accountable for their crimes, ”he added.
Año said he had also ordered the PNP chief, General Debold Sinas, to provide assistance to the families of the victims.
“We wish to remind all police officers to remain calm at all times, to control their emotions and to conduct themselves in a manner commensurate with their position as law enforcement officers,” he also said.
The PNP is an agency attached to the DILG.
