PARIS – World leaders and governments on Wednesday expressed shock and outrage over the storming of the US Capitol in Washington by supporters of President Donald Trump.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Twitter condemned the “shameful scenes in the US Congress. The United States defends democracy around the world and it is now vital that there be a peaceful and orderly transfer of power. “
British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab added in his own tweet: “The United States is rightly proud of its democracy and there can be no justification for these violent attempts to thwart the proper and legal transition of power.”
European Union
The EU foreign policy chief condemned an “assault on American democracy”.
“In the eyes of the world, American democracy seems under siege tonight,” Josep Borrell tweeted.
Calling the action “an assault on American democracy, its institutions and the rule of law,” he added: “This is not the United States. The results of the November 3 elections must be fully respected ”.
France
French Chancellor Jean-Yves Le Drian condemned “a serious attack on democracy.”
“Violence against American institutions is a serious attack on democracy. I condemn it, ”Le Drian tweeted. “The will and votes of the American people must be respected.”
Germany
German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas called on Trump supporters to “stop trampling on democracy.”
“Trump and his supporters should finally accept the decision of the American voters and stop trampling on democracy,” Maas tweeted.
“The enemies of democracy will be delighted to see these incredible images from Washington DC,” he added. “Inflammatory words turn into violent actions.”
German Finance Minister Olaf Scholz, who is also vice chancellor, also condemned the “disturbing images” from Washington.
NATO
“Shocking scenes in Washington, DC,” NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg tweeted.
“The result of this democratic election must be respected,” he said.
The Netherlands
“Horrible Washington DC Images Dear @realDonaldTrump, please recognize @JoeBiden as today’s next president,” Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said on Twitter.

Ireland
Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin, who invited Irish-American Biden to visit his ancestral homeland early in his presidency, tweeted his condemnation.
“The Irish people have a deep connection to the United States of America, built over many generations. I know that many, like me, will be watching the scenes unfolding in Washington DC with great concern and dismay, “said Martin.
Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney went further by directly berating Trump.
“Shocking and deeply sad scenes in Washington DC – We must call this for what it is: a deliberate assault on democracy by a sitting president and his supporters, trying to overturn a free and fair election!” tweeted.
“The world is watching! We hope calm is restored. ”
Greece
“Extremely concerned by the violence and horrible events taking place in Washington DC, American democracy is resilient, deeply rooted and will overcome this crisis,” Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in a tweet.
Turkey
“We are following with concern the internal developments that are taking place in the United States,” Turkey’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
“We call on all parties in the United States to remain restrained and prudent. We believe that the United States will overcome this domestic political crisis in a mature manner. “
Austria
“This is an unacceptable attack on democracy. A peaceful and orderly transfer of power must be guaranteed, ”Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said on Twitter.
Czech Republic
Czech Foreign Minister Tomas Petricek said in a tweet: “The looting and violence in the US Senate are not a good example for countries where democracy is fighting hard for a place in the sun.
