The World Bank wants $ 12 billion for virus vaccines in poor countries

WASHINGTON, United States – The World Bank said Tuesday it asked its board of directors to approve $ 12 billion to help poor countries buy and distribute eventual COVID-19 vaccines.
The bank has already implemented emergency response programs in 111 countries and the extra money, if approved, would go to low- and middle-income countries.
“An effective and safe COVID-19 vaccine is the most promising way forward for the world to reopen safely,” said a World Bank spokesperson.
“The global economy will not fully recover until people feel they can live, socialize, work and travel with confidence.”
The funds will be distributed between 12 and 18 months.
Covid-19 vaccines are not yet commercially available, but World Bank President David Malpass told French newspaper Le Figaro that “the process of distributing a vaccine is complex” and that it was important to anticipate the needs associated with it.
“We want the poorest countries to have access to it (a vaccine), and in these countries we want the most vulnerable people and medical personnel to be vaccinated,” he said.
Malpass said the Washington-based development lender has experience with immunization programs like those targeting polio and measles, as well as managing crises like the Ebola outbreaks.
The World Bank has deployed a record $ 45 billion in financial support between April and June as the global economy contracted amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Latin American leaders have asked the United Nations for free access to a future COVID-19 vaccine, urging major powers to share their knowledge for the sake of global well-being.
Latin America has been hit hard by Covid-19 with almost nine million cases and more than 330,000 deaths, a third of the world total, according to an AFP tally based on official data.
“With the pandemic, as with poverty, no one will save themselves,” Argentine President Alberto Fernández told the UN General Assembly, which is practically brewing due to the health crisis. – AFP

More than 60 rich countries have joined a WHO-backed program to make it easier for poor countries to access coronavirus vaccines, but the United States and China are not on the list released Monday.
The World Health Organization, in coordination with the global vaccine alliance group Gavi, and the Coalition for Innovations in Epidemic Preparedness (CEPI), created a mechanism to ensure a more equitable distribution of future COVID- 19.
But the mechanism, known as Covax, has struggled to raise the funds necessary to provide for the 92 low-income countries and other economies that quickly signed up.

President Donald Trump says a coronavirus vaccine may be available within a month, an acceleration even from his own surprisingly optimistic predictions, but added that the pandemic could go away on its own.
