ONE WEEK before the first draft of the Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) takes place, the league held a virtual draft lottery to choose the order of the selections on Sunday night.
However, the inaugural draft scheduled for February 13 will be unique in that teams from the first women’s professional basketball league in the country will not choose in every round.
This, after all teams had the opportunity to “protect” a maximum of seven players. Guest team Go for Gold-Philippine Navy Lady Sailors were not part of the lottery as all their players must be members of the enlisted armed forces.
By protecting only three players, Glutagence Glow Boosters had 12 picks, including being the only team allowed to draft in the first two rounds.
Stan Quezon Lady Spartan protected five players by giving them 10 selections, Pacific Water Queens had six protective players who gave them nine selections, while the original WNBL Parañaque Lady Aces had seven signed players, resulting in the team only getting eight selections. .
Two more teams are expected to turn in their proper papers to the league office this week. The first team to accomplish the task will receive the remaining selections in each round, still subject to the number of protected players submitted.
In the third round of the draft, Glutagence again picks first followed by Stan Quezon. Round four will see Stan Quezon, Pacific Water, and Glutagence choose, in that order.
The fifth round has Stan Quezon picking first again, then Pacific Water, Parañaque, and Glutagence. Parañaque chooses first in the sixth round, followed by Glutagence, Pacific Water and Stan Quezon.
Again in the seventh round, the Aces get the first dibs, while the next are Lady Spartans, Queens and Boosters.
Pacific Water gets its first first pick of a round in the eighth, followed by Stan Quezon, Glutagence and Paranaque.
The Boosters will open things up in the ninth round with the Queens, Aces and Lady Spartans choosing next, in that order.
Rounds 10 and 12 are in identical order with the writing of Parañaque, Pacific Water, Stan Quezon, and Glutagence, while round 11 has the Aces picking first, followed by the Boosters, Queens, and Lady Spartans.
A total of 115 players will make up the league’s first draft class, all of whom participated in the Draft Combine from December 12-13.
