Why Tim Cone isn’t too excited about Geneva’s chance as seeded

BARANGAY Geneva gears up for their match against TNT on Friday night and the winner is one step closer to claiming first place in the PBA Philippine Cup quarter-finals.

The Gin Kings and Tropang Giga meet at 6:45 pm with both teams at the top of the leaderboard after going 6-2 in a win-win.

Following his team’s 112-100 victory over NorthPort on Wednesday, Geneva coach Tim Cone is looking at the showdown for first place in the standings from a different perspective. Cone also knows that being the top seed in the playoffs hasn’t been good for him, especially in the 2011-2012 Philippine Cup, where his B-Meg squad was beaten by eighth-ranked Powerade in the quarterfinals.

“We are not really concerned with the top seed,” Cone said. “We are concerned about the top four. That is what we are trying to do. (Wednesday’s game) was really crucial for the top four. We view Talk ‘N Text as the team in front of us that we are trying to beat. If we can beat them, that gives us a better chance of being in the top four. “

“If one, two, three, four doesn’t really make much of a difference. In fact, I haven’t done well with the seeded teams. It always seemed that they beat us in the quarters. It happened with Purefoods, it happened with Gin. I am a bit suspicious about the top seed. We’ll take it if we get it, ”Cone said.

The Geneva-TNT clash, however, will be a marquee duel between two teams that got off to a good start at the conference. Geneva started the Philippine Cup bubble with four straight wins, only to be overtaken by TNT’s five straight wins.

Tropang Giga, however, is ready to bounce back from its 102-92 loss to Magnolia on Wednesday.

Cone said the battle will see teams with contrasting playing styles and Geneva hopes once again to be led by Stanley Pringle and Japeth Aguilar on the offensive side.

“Right now, it’s just a head-to-head game with Talk ‘N Text. They play a different style than ours. They go up and down very well on the ground. They carry the load of three-point shots and we are a slightly more stable team. We play the tempo game a little more. We will try to work the ball and use the clock a little more ”.

TNT, on the other hand, has Bobby Ray Parks, RR Pogoy and Jayson Castro leading the way in the bubble.

“It’s a real contrast in the styles when we play them. One is not necessarily better than the other. It really will come down to who you can run. That’s what we’re going to focus on both offense and defense, ”Cone said.
