(CNN) – The World Health Organization (WHO) said it is aware of the UK report on a small number of children with the inflammatory response to Covid-19.

On Wednesday, Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO technical leader for the coronavirus response, said: “We are seeing this with our clinical network, and indeed our clinical network had a conference call yesterday that discussed this.”

“There are some recent rare descriptions of children in some European countries who have had this inflammatory syndrome, which is similar to Kawasaki syndrome, but appears to be very rare,” said Van Kerkhove.

Dr. Mike Ryan, executive director of the WHO’s emergency health program, said doctors are investigating what is “causing the inflammation that attacks tissue, in addition to lung tissue.”

“We have seen this in the past with many emerging diseases. They do not necessarily attack only one type of tissue; there may be multiple organs affected and many of you have seen reports of other organs that have been affected with this disease, “Ryan said.
