There is no set place that royals have gone to school over the years. From elegant boarding schools to homeschooling, members of the Royal Family have taken different approaches to their children’s education. Read on to find out where some of the nation’s most beloved royals studied and which royals earned a college degree.

The Queen and Prince Philip

As children, the queen and her sister, Princess Margaret, were home schooled by their governess Marion Crawford, whom they named Crawfie.

Neither of them obtained any formal qualifications, but the queen learned a lot about the constitution and learned to speak French fluently.

Prince Philip attended Gordonstoun School, a boarding school located in Moray, Scotland, known for its difficult schedule and sports-focused curriculum.

He later pursued a career in the Royal Navy, attending Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, where he met the future Queen and Princess Margaret during a royal tour of the grounds.

The Queen’s Children

Prince Charles was initially tutored at home, before entering Cheam School in Headley, Hampshire, where his father was a student.

Later, Charles would also attend Gordonstoun like his father, eventually becoming Head Boy before studying at Trinity College, Cambridge, reading Archeology, Anthropology, and History, and earning a 2.2 degree.

The queen’s other sons, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward, also attended Gordonstoun as their father and older brother.

As Gordonstoun was an all-boys school at the time, Princess Anne was tutored at home until the age of 13, before entering Benenden School near Cranbrook, Kent.

Prince Andrew then pursued a career in the Royal Navy, while Edward attended Jesus College, Cambridge, earning a 2.2 degree in History.

In recent years it has become much more common for royalty to obtain a college education.

Prince Andrew and Sarah, the Duchess of York’s daughters, attended college, and Princess Beatrice earned a 2.1 BA in History and History of Ideas from Goldsmiths, University of London.

The couple’s youngest daughter, Princess Eugenie, also studied Art History, English Literature and Politics at Newcastle University.

Princess Anne’s two children, Peter Phillips and Zara Tindall, attended Gordonstoun like her grandfather, Prince Philip, and later both attended college.

Both Peter and Zara studied at the University of Exeter, with Peter studying Sports Science and Zara studying Equine Physiotherapy.

Prince Edward’s two children with Sophie, the Countess of Wessex, Louise and James, are still in school.
