Bayern Munich aren’t exactly struggling, but this pandemic season, the European champions and Germany are facing big challenges at home.
With the exception of the 2018-19 season, Bayern Munich have won the league uncontrollably since the 2012-13 tournament, comfortably winning the title by a margin of at least 10 points ahead of the closest suitors to the throne.
Having won eight consecutive league titles, Bayern have been so dominant domestically that the Bundesliga has become synonymous with the club.
The last time Bayern failed to lift the league trophy was nine years ago, when Borussia Dortmund successfully defended their title.
Still, the 2010s are by far the club’s most successful decade, including their two Champions League victories in 2013 and 2020.
But while it’s good for the club, some observers wonder if Bayern’s dominance is good for the Bundesliga, essentially putting it in danger of becoming a one-club league.
While Bayern can take pride in being one of the best clubs on the planet, the Bundesliga, mainly due to a lack of competition, has yet to reach the same level of prominence that the Premier League and La Liga enjoy.
On a more positive note, the Bundesliga table at this stage suggests that a more competitive league is developing.
With 28 points, Bayer Leverkusen surprisingly leads the group with a one point advantage ahead of Bayern and RB Leipzig, while fourth place Dortmund is five points behind.
A massive clash awaits on Sunday, December 20, when league leaders Leverkusen host Bayern.
The match could just be a preview of who would lift the Bundesliga trophy at the end of the season.
