MANILA, Philippines – President Lord Allan Velasco’s House of Representatives now has 32 vice presidents after the house elected two more lawmakers to the position.
On the last day of session for 2020 on Wednesday, the House elected Cavite 8th District Representative Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino and Davao City 3rd District Representative Isidro Ungab as new deputy speakers.
Last March, Ungab was removed as chairman of the House appropriations committee under the leadership of then-former President Alan Peter Cayetano.
Defender loses the presidency
Meanwhile, Anakalusugan party list representative Mike Defender was stripped of the chairmanship of the House Public Accounts Committee.
Replacing Defender is Probinsiyano Ako party list representative José “Bonito” Singson Jr., who was also elected to the position during Wednesday’s plenary session.
“Speaker Lord Velasco is the worst (sic). He did not even have the courtesy to speak to me, even when we had a brief meeting last week regarding the investigation to be carried out by the Public Accounts Committee, ”Defensor said in a statement sent to journalists after his dismissal as president of the panel of public accounts.
“He even asked [to] We all suspend the investigations until January, which I respectfully accepted, “he added.
Defensor said he would not have “resisted” if Velasco had asked him to resign.
“Courtesy and leadership dictate that although we may have differences in the previous leadership struggle, we treat each other in a respectable manner. I am comforted to think that clear lines have been drawn and, in the spirit of the season, I wish the speaker a Merry Christmas. See you next year, ”said the legislator.
Meanwhile, the House minority also elected party list representative Magsasaka Argel Cabatbat as deputy minority leader and party list representative Gabriela Arlene Brosas as assistant minority leader.
