US officials said Tuesday they plan to release 6.4 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine nationwide in an initial distribution after regulators authorize the first one for emergency use.

Officials with the government’s Operation Warp Speed program told reporters that states and other jurisdictions had been informed on Friday of their estimated vaccine allocations in the first shipments so that they can begin planning how best to distribute them to their populations. high-risk.

Officials had previously said they anticipate 40 million doses will be distributed by the end of the year, a figure they reiterated on Tuesday.

Last week, Pfizer Inc applied for the first US emergency use authorization of a COVID-19 vaccine after publishing data that showed it to be 95% effective in preventing the disease in a large phase III trial. .

The US Food and Drug Administration is expected to rule on the USA after an expert advisory committee meets to discuss the vaccine on December 10.

Pfizer, which developed its vaccine with German partner BioNTech SE and others involved in shipping and handling the vaccines, has begun testing trials so they can ensure the distribution infrastructure is working properly, officials said.

US states and territories are in charge of how the coronavirus vaccine will be distributed to their populations.

Drug manufacturers, in concert with federal officials, will ship their vaccines to these jurisdictions, but governors are expected to determine the best way to distribute them within their states.

States have developed individual plans that prioritize who will be among the first to receive vaccine doses as they become available. Many states have said they plan to vaccinate front-line healthcare workers and nursing home residents at their first push.
