The University of the Philippines (UP) continues to be in the league of the best universities in the world, according to the 2021 Times Higher Education World University Rankings (THE-WUR).
UP was ranked fifth among the Southeast Asian Outstanding Universities (SEA), which are the National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), the University of Malaya, and the University of Brunei Darussalam.
The country’s leading educational institution also retains its place in the list of the world’s 500 best universities. According to THE-WUR, UP remains in the 401-500 group, after being evaluated together with 1,527 research-intensive universities.
UP scored its highest on the global research citation or influence criterion, which represents 30% of its total score. THE-WUR derives citation scores by capturing the average number of times that academics around the world cite published work from a university.
This year, bibliometric data provider Elsevier examined 86 million citations from 2015-2020 in 13.6 million journal articles, article reviews, conference proceedings, books, and book chapters published between 2015 and 2019.
According to THE, citations are a way of measuring the role of a university in spreading new knowledge and ideas and its contribution to the sum of human knowledge.
The other performance indicators are grouped into the areas of teaching (30%), research (30%), international perspectives (7.5%) and industry income (2.5%).
UP Deputy Vice President for Academic Affairs, Carla Dimalanta, pointed out that UP surpasses universities in neighboring countries in terms of research citations. Its 86.7 score surpasses the 81.5 of the NUS and the 83 of the NTU, the two best universities in the ASEAN region. Singapore’s NUS and NTU are ranked 25th and 47th, respectively, in the world university rankings.
UP is the first Philippine university to be listed in THE-WUR and the only one to enter the top 500.
