Unused oil rigs viewed as observation posts

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Navy plans to convert two retired oil rigs near Recto Bank in the Western Philippine Sea as observation posts. Vice Admiral Giovanni Carlo Bacordo on Saturday inspected the Nido and Matinloc platforms located northwest of the Palawan coast.

The two oil fields closed in November last year after producing at least 40 million barrels of oil for 40 years.

“This inspection aims to analyze the viability of these retired gas rigs to turn them into observation posts for Recto Bank and the Malampaya gas rig. This will further enhance our ability to protect our maritime interests at these strategic locations, ”Bacordo said in a statement Sunday.

The facilities can also serve as a shelter.
