MANILA, Philippines – Senator Risa Hontiveros on Tuesday called the impeachment complaint filed against Associate Supreme Court Justice Marvic Leonen in the House of Representatives “unnecessary” and a “distraction.”
“This is a distraction that will only drag lawmakers and the public into a pointless political fiasco at a time when government efforts should focus on helping Filipinos affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and the country’s battered economy. “Hontiveros said in a statement. .
The complaint, which the senator also considered “counterproductive,” was filed in the House by Edwin Cordevilla, secretary general of the Philippine League of Good Governance Defenders, who was assisted by attorney Larry Gadon. He was supported by the representative of Ilocos Norte, Angelo Barba.
The complaint said Leonen “clearly lacks integrity because he did not file his Assets and Liabilities Statement (SALN),” citing a newspaper column that claimed Leonen failed to file his SALN for 15 years.
Who will benefit the most from this impeachment lawsuit? Surely not the Filipino people, ”Hontiveros continued.

By filing the impeachment lawsuit, Hontiveros asked his lower house colleagues to prioritize the needs of the Filipino people amid the pandemic.
“With all due respect to our colleagues in the House of Representatives, I would like to refocus on the thousands of Filipinos who are bedridden or have lost loved ones due to the COVID-19 pandemic, those who have lost their homes due to recent typhoons and those who have lost their livelihoods amid the economic crisis, “he said.
“Let’s prioritize the real needs of the people,” he added.
