SEOUL – A UN committee on Wednesday adopted a North Korean human rights resolution in the United States for the 16th consecutive year. For the second year in a row, South Korea participated in the consensus approval of the resolution, but did not co-sponsor the resolution.

The resolution, adopted by the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly, is expected to be presented to the General Assembly next month.

The resolution, drawn up by the European Union, highlights human rights violations in North Korea, saying: “It condemns in the strongest terms the long-standing and ongoing systematic, widespread and serious violations of human rights.”

The resolution lists the human rights violations including torture, inhumane detention conditions, sexual violence, public executions, and political jails that exist in North Korea.

The resolution also raises concerns about the treatment of defectors repatriated to North Korea and the safety of women and girls who are forced to leave the country, exposing them to human trafficking.

The resolution urges the UN Security Council to take more action against North Korea and its leaders, including taking the matter to the International Criminal Court and more sanctions to “effectively target those who appear to be most responsible for the crimes. human rights violations “.

The resolution was met with strong criticism from North Korea, whose UN representative, Kim Song, claimed it was part of a “political plot.”

“The DPRK delegation categorically rejects the draft resolution as a political conspiracy document that has nothing to do with the promotion and protection of human rights,” Kim said, referring to North Korea by its official name, the People’s Republic. Democratic of Korea.

“Every year, in the continuation of the hostile policy against the DPRK, (the resolutions) represent an intolerable provocation aimed at undermining our system under the guise of human rights issues,” Kim said, adding that the resolution was drafted by ” hostile forces “based on” false information crafted by human scum deserters. “
