Each year, the Pantone Color Institute announces a color of the year intended to represent the mood of the coming year. Late last month the institute announced two shades, ‘Ultimate Gray’ and ‘Illuminating’ as the Pantone color of the year 2021. The union of the two independent colors, they said, expressed a mood of strength and positivity.
“As people search for ways to empower themselves with energy, clarity and hope to overcome continued uncertainty, energetic and encouraging nuances satisfy our quest for vitality,” the post reads.
Metrolife spoke with experts from the field of fashion, interior design and advertising to find out how the trend will take shape in India.
Interior design
Shalini Chandrashekar and GS Mahaboob Basha, co-founders of Taliesyn – Design & Architecture, say that gray symbolizes a solid, neutral and subtle demeanor, while yellow is emblematic of everything sunny, cheerful and vibrant.
“A certain sense of visual dynamism kicks in when these tones come together, and their combination is a symbolic harbinger of elevation,” says Shalini.
Asha Sairam, Principal Designer at Studio Lotus, says that with her gloomy, muted expression, gray serves as the ideal flooring, while yellow can be used to add pops of bright color to furniture upholstery, throw pillows and cushions, or even in a work of art.
“Overuse of yellow, especially the brightest hues, can be overwhelming in a space,” he says.
Abhinayah Sundaramoorthy, co-founder of The Yellow Dwelling, says that vases, lamps, cushions, curtains, bedding, flower pots and flowers can all have shades of yellow; while the walls, the sofa and the floor can be gray.
Shalini and Mahaboob propose industrial-themed furniture in materials such as aluminum, accessories with a concrete finish and decorative elements in gray. Yellow can be used as an accent color on selective decor pieces and even on materials like Athangudi tile, birch wood, travertine, Jaisalmer stone.
fashion
Fashion designer Laxmi Krishna says she sees nudes and pastels that will become popular in 2021.
“As someone who works in the film industry, most of my work depends on the character. But Pantone hues allow a lot of experimentation, ”he says.
Gray is not new to the world of fashion and allows plenty of room to mix and match, making it a favorite with many designers. “You can contrast the tone with bright metallic tones. People are also open to bright combinations like purple and yellow, ”he says. She sees that the trend has more followers among women. “Men in their 20s may be more open to trying things, but women of all age groups are experimental,” he says.
Pair bright yellow accessories with more subtle shades and keep makeup to a minimum, she advises.
Designer Riyaz Pasha, on the other hand, says that until now people have not been open to these shades and hopes that now people will accept them more.
“It should have included runway green and baby pink, which are the colors of the season,” he says. He sees Pantone colors in clothing more than accessories.

Writing and Creative Executive Hrishikesh Singh says that while these colors provide a fresh canvas to experiment with, there is no point in changing brand identities to fit the trend.
The colors are selected after much research, capturing a large part of the audience’s sentiment. Which means it’s a palette you can trust. It creates a lot of space for platform-specific communication, ”he says.
Harshita Gaddipati, designer, says that colors have a very different impact on the minds of the audience.
Pantone colors, he explains, are essential for advertisers, since it allows them to know the nuances that can withstand the prevailing emotional condition of the masses, which are our playing field.
It will be a while before customers in the country start to take advantage of the shadows. “The sense of hope and being visually conveyed by yellow is something that many clients could move forward with as many campaigns could revolve around recovering from 2020,” adds Hrishikesh.
Youtube ads, channel branding, and social media palettes is how he sees these colors being used.
