Justin Gaethje will look to unify the lightweight titles when he takes on reigning division champion Khabib Nurmagomedov in the main event of UFC 254 this Saturday (October 17, 2020) in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
Before that, let’s take a short trip down Memory Lane to the night “Highlight” first got a taste of UFC gold by winning the interim title. At UFC 249, Gaethje faced Tony Ferguson in what was the promotion’s first event after their extended hiatus until COVID-19. Known for being two of the most entertaining fighters in the sport, Gaethje and Ferguson did not disappoint as the two went head to head for nearly five rounds.
It turned out to be a bad strategy for Ferguson, as he received a lot of punishment from “Highlight,” who is known to be one of the fiercest forwards in the game. In the end, the referee on duty had no choice but to end the violence in the fifth and final round, giving Gaethje a victory by technical knockout (TKO).
As a bonus, in the embedded video player below, you can better hear what it sounds like when Gaethje’s bombs landed on Ferguson’s flesh thanks to great microphones and an empty arena.
While Gaethje’s win ruined the fight fans’ last chance to see Khabib vs Ferguson, now he’s the one sitting at the front of the table. If he can take down “El Águila,” he will not only ruin the longest undefeated run in the sport, but he will spark his own path to all-time greatness.
