Israel Adesanya remains the UFC Middleweight World Champion after reversing the challenge from top contender Paulo Costa with surprising ease in the UFC 253 main event.
It would be hard to find fault with Adesanya’s performance inside the Octagon on Saturday night. “The Last Stylebender” peppered the undefeated Costa with brutal kicks to the legs from the start of the fight and, in the second round, the damage suffered by the Brazilian was impossible to lose.
Adesanya knew she had her man in trouble and closed the show with just under a minute left of the second round. A perfect counter left hand saw Costa fall to the mat, before being saved by referee Jason Herzog.
As impressed as fans were with Adesanya’s work, the same cannot be said for her antics immediately after the stoppage.
Shortly after Herzog turned down the fight, Adesanya stepped over Costa and made a thrusting motion with her hips, as if to hump her opponent.
The pair had exchanged many heated words in the lead up to the fight over Adesanya’s alleged lack of a running game, and it seems likely that this was the motivation behind Adesanya’s rude gesture.
That being said, it cannot be denied that Adesanya’s actions were disgusting and unsportsmanlike. Disapproving fans were quick to react to the incident on Twitter.
“I think the air hump was a bit over the top,” user @ Cogent_K9 said, while others were much more damning in their conviction of Adesanya.
“He was very disrespectful in the end. He just ruined my image of him,” @kallegerde stated, and @gabefdz added, “Those dry humps after the fight weren’t classy. No need for that.
User @arigilberg possibly summed it up best in just two words: “Lack of respect # UFC253.”
Some were more analytical in their reaction, with @ MMAGoat6 criticizing Costa for his game plan, rather than Adesanya for his celebration.
“Costa just didn’t come prepared. He had no answer for leg kicks. If the weight cut is not the culprit, I would blame the coaches and switch camps. He looked like a fighter from another era, not a complete MMA fighter. “. “
Some also enjoyed Adesanya’s post-fight statement, such as @ masonmuller2, who stated, “Izzy dry-fucking Costa is hilarious after dominating him.”
The truth of the matter is that Israel Adesanya is a phenomenal fighter, with the potential to become one of the best of all time.
The 31-year-old would definitely be better off exercising the same control over his post-fight emotions as he did during his work in the Octagon. Episodes like this paint a dark cloud over what would otherwise be a big night’s job for the New Zealander.
