UAAP Board meets Thursday to review reports

Another series of meetings is scheduled for next week, as no resolution was reached in Tuesday’s meeting between officials from the Joint Administrative Order Group (JAO) and the UAAP on two schools that allegedly violated government health protocols.

In a statement issued by UAAP, the league’s Board of Directors will meet on Thursday “to review these reports and address other related cases before taking appropriate action.”

The meeting lasted over three hours and the UAAP presented the internal investigation of the Santo Tomás University investigation committee on its men’s basketball team, which allegedly went to a training bubble in Sorsogon and allegedly violated protocols.

The National University, whose volleyball teams were also questioned for allegedly violating training protocols, was also asked to submit a formal report to the UAAP for deliberation.

The statement, however, did not say whether the league would handle penalties if necessary.

Present at the meeting were UST Legal Advisor Atty Alfonso Verzosa and Atty Elgin Legal Coordinator Michael Perez, NU Athletic Director Otie Camangian, UAAP Executive Director Rebo Saguisag and UAAP Season 83 President Nonong Calanog de La Come out.

The government panel consisted of the Chairman of the Board of Games and Amusement, Baham Mitra, the director of national training of the Philippine Sports Commission, Marc Velasco, the commissioner of the Commission of Higher Education, Prospero De Vera III, CHED Executive Director Atty Cindy Jaro; and Health Department Representative Rodley Carza.

“The meeting was an important step towards solving these problems that concern student-athletes from UAAP member schools,” the UAAP statement reads.

Meanwhile, Velasco said the government panel would discuss the UAAP findings at a separate meeting scheduled next week.
