MANILA, Philippines – UAAP has imposed an indefinite ban on former Santo Tomás University head coach Aldin Ayo, the league announced.
“After careful deliberation, the UAAP BOT ratified the BMD’s decision to indefinitely ban coach Aldin Ayo from participating in any capacity, in all UAAP events and activities sanctioned by UAAP,” the league said in a statement Wednesday.
“The ban is based on the UST report that showed Ayo was endangering the health and well-being of the student athletes under his charge when conducting training during a state of public emergency declared by the government aimed at halting the COVID outbreak. -19 “.
Ayo has come under fire after being front and center of the UST men’s basketball team fiasco in connection with their bubble training ground in Capuy, Sorsogon.
UST held its training camp in June, when most areas of Luzon were still under enhanced community quarantine (ECQ).
Ayo, who coached the Growling Tigers for two seasons at UAAP including a final last year, resigned from his position last week.
Ayo’s ban could be an indication of things to come in the coming weeks with the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) involving the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) also conducting an investigation into possible infractions by UST.
The university faces a possible suspension from the UAAP for alleged violation of quarantine protocols amid the closing of the pandemic.
The controversy has also left UST reeling from an exodus of players, including its former captain CJ Cansino and rising star Rhenz Abando.
Cansino has already transferred to the University of the Philippines, while Abando, along with other former Tigres in Brent Paraíso and Ira Bataller, have committed to Letran.
