Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, October 29) – At least 16 people are now known to have died after Typhoon Quinta struck various areas of Luzon and the Visayas, disaster agency officials said Thursday.
The death toll has risen from nine in Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol region, western and central Visayas, according to the latest situation report from the National Council for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management.
Another 22 were injured, while four remain missing in those regions. Details on these victims have not yet been provided.
The NDRRMC also has to provide the updated breakdown of deaths. As of Wednesday, seven registered deaths were from Mimaropa. Four of them drowned: a mother and her baby in Magsaysay, Occidental Mindoro; a male in Mogpog, Marinduque; and a man in Odiongan, Romblon. The other three were hit by a falling tree: a female from Mindoro Oriental; a man from El Nido, Palawan; and another male from Odiongan, Romblon. The cause of two other deaths in central Visayas has not yet been provided.
A total of 242,220 residents or 57,742 families from 1,008 barangays in central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, western and eastern Visayas were affected by Typhoon Quinta, which is already outside the Philippine territory.
Of the total affected, 65,579 people or 16,830 families sought refuge in evacuation centers.
The cost of damage to agriculture and infrastructure has also increased to $ 737.1 million, with Calabarzon being the highest cost with a value of $ 593.1 million.
Typhoon Quinta partially destroyed 27,213 houses, while another 2,315 were totally damaged. At least 330 passengers remain stranded in the different ports of Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol Region, Western and Eastern Visayas.
Typhoon Quinta, the 17th tropical cyclone for 2020, left the Philippines on Tuesday.
