Typhoon Goni, the strongest typhoon to hit anywhere in the world this year, swept through the south of the main island of Luzon in the Philippines on Sunday, an initial government report showed.
Storm surges hit some coastal towns, while rivers overflowed and levees were destroyed, submerging several villages in Bicol.
More than 390,000 people had fled to safer ground, including more than 345,000 to evacuation centers, raising concerns about adherence to coronavirus-related health protocols.
Goni is one of the strongest storms to hit the Philippines since Haiyan 2013, which killed more than 6,300 people.
