The Department of Agriculture (DA) on Wednesday, November 18, 2020, estimated the damage to the agricultural sector from the onslaught of typhoon Ulysses (Vamco) at P3,840 million.
The DA also said that due to early preparation and warnings, a total of 341,812 metric tons of rice worth P5,476 million and P85,619 million or 6,757 metric tons of corn were saved.
Damage breakdown is as follows: P1.93 billion in rice crops, P365.68 million in corn, P795.74 million in high-value crops, P27.83 million in livestock and poultry products, P710 .79 million in fishery products and P8.24 million in irrigation and agriculture facilities.
The affected areas were in the Cordillera Administrative Region, Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzón, Calabarzón and Bicol.
The DA said agricultural losses have affected 104,733 farmers and fishermen, and 101,904 hectares of agricultural areas. The lost production volume was 160,873 metric tons.
“The affected DA Regional Field Offices are continually conducting field validations to further assess damages and losses in the agricultural and fisheries sector,” the department said in a statement.
The agency secured assistance to affected sectors, especially rice, corn and assorted vegetable seed stocks, medicines and biologicals for livestock and poultry, the Survival and Recovery (Sure) loan program of the Agricultural Credit (ACPC) and the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation indemnity fund.
