TS Goni Intensifies to Severe Tropical Storm Ahead of Expected Entry to PAR

MANILA, Philippines – Tropical Storm Goni, which is being monitored outside the Philippine Area of ​​Responsibility (PAR), has rapidly escalated to a severe tropical storm, the state meteorological office said Thursday.

In its 11 a.m. weather bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Goni has turned into a severe tropical storm at 8 a.m. Thursday.

Goni is expected to enter the eastern limit of the PAR between Thursday afternoon or Thursday evening. Once you enter the PAR, Goni will be renamed Rolly.

According to the latest data from Pagasa, Goni was last seen 1,545 kilometers east of Central Luzon.

The severe tropical storm also saw maximum sustained winds of 95 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gusts of up to 115 kph.

Goni was also seen moving west at 10 kph.

The severe tropical storm was forecast to intensify into a typhoon within 24 hours and continue to intensify as it moves over the Philippine Sea, Pagasa said.

State meteorologists said that while Goni has no direct effect on any part of the country at the moment, it may bring heavy rain over the eastern sections of central and southern Luzon on either Friday or the weekend as it approaches.

Pagasa also said that the tropical cyclone No. 1 wind signal could rise in some provinces in the Bicol region and in northern Samar on Friday night.

Meanwhile, Pagasa is also monitoring another tropical depression outside the PAR and it was last detected 2,510 kilometers east of Mindanao.

This tropical depression also has maximum sustained winds of 55 km / h and gusts of up to 70 km / h, and was seen moving west-northwest at 15 km / h.

Pagasa said the tropical depression is expected to enter the PAR between Monday, November 2, or Tuesday, November 3.
