The hacking attempts targeted staff at Washington-based SKDKnickerbocker, a campaign strategy and communications company that works with Biden and other prominent Democrats, for the past two months.
A person familiar with SKDK’s response to the attempts said the hackers were unable to access the company’s networks. “They are well defended, so there has been no gap”
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed the accusations as “nonsense”. Moscow has repeatedly denied the use of hacking to interfere in elections in other countries.
SKDK CEO Anita Dunn was the White House communications director during Barack Obama’s presidency and serves on the Biden campaign as a senior advisor.
Attempts to infiltrate SKDK were recently pointed out to the campaign company by Microsoft, which identified hackers linked to the Russian government as possible culprits. The attacks included phishing, a hacking method that seeks to trick users into revealing passwords, as well as other efforts to infiltrate SKDK’s network.
