MANILA, Philippines – Former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV wants President Rodrigo Duterte and his daughter, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, to stand as a tandem in the 2022 national elections, to see them lose.
Trillanes said he expects defeat for the two Dutertes in the next election if they ever decide to run as a tandem for vice president and president.
“I would encourage them to do that, and they have every right to do so, and in fact ideally they would be rejected in the 2022 election. So it’s even preferable for Duterte to run for vice president, than for Sara Duterte to run for president. . We expect that rejection, his rejection in 2022, ”Trillanes said in an interview with ABS-CBN News Channel on Monday.
According to Trillanes, Duterte’s popularity as president is declining based on an “internal poll.”
“I do not agree with the premise that he is still acceptable because we are conducting our own internal polls and his numbers are significantly low and continuously declining at a very high rate,” said the former senator.
He also noted that the political opposition could have a better chance in the 2022 elections due to what he called the frustration the public feels about the Duterte administration.
“I think the big difference is the change in political times. You can feel it everywhere. There is so much frustration, disappointment and disgust with the current administration, so the clamor for change will sound louder and louder as we approach the 2022 elections and that will be the turning point, “said Trillanes.
The presidential chief legal advisor, Salvador Panelo, previously raised the possibility of a Duterte-Duterte team in the upcoming elections.
However, presidential spokesman Harry Roque said the president is already eager to finish his term and return to his hometown, Davao City, in 2022.
