MANILA, Philippines – Former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV clarified Thursday that he and former Magdalo congressman Gary Alejano presented a communication to the International Criminal Court (ICC) on President Rodrigo Duterte’s war against illegal drugs before left-wing groups.

In a statement, Trillanes said that the communication he and Alejano presented in June 2017 adopted and complemented the one presented by attorney Jude Josue Sabio in April of that year.

“Atty’s formal withdrawal. Sage of the ICC in January 2020 simply removed himself as an interested party and did not affect the case in any way, as the ICC processes are different from our own court processes. Furthermore, as mentioned, our communication formally adopted and even complemented the one he presented, ”he said.

It noted that both communications were used as the main basis for the ICC’s preliminary examination of various allegations of crimes against humanity against Duterte in February 2018.

Trillanes, known as one of the loudest critics of the president, explained that Atty. Romel Bagares and the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army-National Democratic Front of the Philippines (CPP-NPA-NDF) presented theirs between mid-to-late 2018.

“As a background, for the first two years of the Duterte administration, the CPP / NPA / NDF is in a coalition / power-sharing government with Duterte. In fact, there were at least 3 cabinet secretaries from the CPP / NPA / NDF, ”Trillanes said.

The former senator spoke of designated leftists: peasant leader Rafael Mariano, social worker Judy Taguiwalo and former congresswoman Liza Maza.

“At that time, they never called Duterte about the EJK (extrajudicial killings) and therefore did not bring a case to the ICC. It was only when Duterte finally scrapped the peace talks that they began to raise issues against him, “he said.

“So again, it’s clear that when the CPP / NPA / NDF was still in bed with Duterte, they approved Duterte’s EJK,” he added.
