MANILA – Regional tourism director Jeff Ortega topped Twitter’s list of trends in the Philippines on Tuesday after being caught in a now-viral video featuring former Senator Bongbong Marcos as vice president.
Netizens criticized Ortega for refusing to recognize Vice President Leni Robredo, who was duly elected as the second highest official in the country, defeating Marcos in the 2016 elections.
On Instagram, Ortega introduced Marcos as “former senator and vice president” during the launch of the region’s tourism brand.

The video, which he posted on his official Instagram page on October 6, has been viewed nearly 13,000 times at the time of writing.
“We only have one duly elected vice president and that is the vice president.
@lenirobredo. So please get over your illusion, Jeff Ortega, ”wrote one Twitter user.
Another said: “Public offices are the public trust. Marcos cannot be proclaimed vice president when it is public knowledge that it is far from the truth. Jeff Ortega should be removed from office for flagrant breach of the law and the constitution! “
Ortega, who comes from a prominent political clan in La Unión, was appointed director of tourism in the Ilocos Region in September 2019.
Before taking up public office, he was a businessman and known as the boyfriend of actress Jasmine Curtis-Smith.
In the 2016 general elections, Robredo beat Marcos in the vice presidential race by more than 263,000 votes, the tightest in memory.
The defeated vice presidential candidate has pending an electoral protest against Robredo before the Supreme Court, as the Presidential Electoral Tribunal.
In response to the problem, the Department of Tourism (DOT) reminded its employees to “perform and perform their duties with the highest degree of excellence and professionalism.”
“We continue to be guided by the Civil Service Commission (CSC), especially in expressing views on current political issues or problems,” the agency said. – With a report by Jeff Canoy, ABS-CBN News
