SMART CLARK GIGA CITY – Phoenix Super LPG head coach Topex Robinson decided not to risk aggravating Matthew Wright’s injury in the opening of his semi-final fight against TNT on Wednesday night.

Wright sprained his right ankle after he accidentally stepped on Troy Rosario’s foot when he made a basket at the 7:43 mark in the first quarter.

The statistical points favorite kept playing before being eliminated two minutes later and never returned to the game despite efforts by the team’s medical staff to bandage his injured ankle.

Wright’s injury was a major blow to the Fuel Masters’ attempt to take the lead by handing over a 95-92 decision to Tropang Giga in Game 1 of the best-of-five tiff.

But Robinson would rather rest his main gunner early on than lose him for the entire series.

“He (Wright) asked my opinion. Sabi ko, ‘If you’re not 100 percent, I’m not going to bet with you.’ I really wanted to play, but (I told him), ‘I don’t want to lose you eventually,’ ”Robinson said.

Wright had just two points and one assist in six minutes and 43 seconds of play.

With a day off, Robinson said the 29-year-old is ready when they try to tie the series in Game 2 on Friday.

But in case the Fil-Canadian driver is not in tip-top shape at the next outing, Robinson insisted his Fuel Masters are eager to step up.

It will be ready. But whether we have Matt or not, we’re going to compete. We have every reason to do it as an excuse, but we are not going to use it now. “

Wright also assured that he is ready to dress in Game 2.

“I’ll be better,” he said.
