PHOENIX Super LPG coach Topex Robinson shed tears as he spoke of Calvin Abueva and his dilemma inside the PBA bubble following the Fuel Masters’ win over Magnolia on Friday night.

Robinson was thrilled when asked how the Fuel Masters were able to mount a 17-point comeback at the end of a grueling three-game, five-day schedule at the 2020 PBA Philippine Cup.

“I think one of the big reasons we don’t really give up is that it’s very difficult to get out of the gym or out of the hotel knowing that one of your children is not with you,” Robinson said, referring to the suspended Abueva.

Abueva, suspended for the past 15 months, was allowed to join Fuel Masters in Clark’s bubble, but has yet to get the signal to play after obtaining his professional license from the Games and Entertainment Board (GAB).

“We told Calvin to keep playing and being positive. It’s really difficult that I really want to play and want to contribute. But the best thing you could do is cheer us on and it’s hard for a coach to always leave the gym or hotel knowing that one of your children is not with you in this battle, ”added Robinson.

Robinson said he does not want to return to the Quest Hotel with another loss knowing how determined Abueva is to return to the court.

“Winning it for Calvin is really important to us. We don’t want to lose again and go back to the hotel knowing that Calvin wants to help us and the best thing he can do is practice, encourage us, and pray for us, ”Robinson said.

When Phoenix snapped a two-game losing streak, Robinson said the team’s energy on that successful comeback attempt was exactly what it lacked in previous games, something Abueva can easily provide.

“The reason [we lost] during those games [was] because that’s what we lack [from] Calvin. The energy, and that’s what the team gave us during that last quarter. You see everyone cheering because we know that if Calvin is on the bench, he will do the same.

“Again, we just want to honor him and we just want to win for him. We just want to keep fighting because if we’re going to give up, we want to bring in so much energy because he needs it right now. We are only here to fight for him and fight for our brother and fight for our families, ”Robinson said.

Robinson said he respects the process Abueva must go through to be reinstated, but the difficult thing is explaining the situation to Abueva.

“We honor what they are doing for Calvin. I know the commissioner is doing the right thing. It’s hard to explain those things to him. He’s been through challenging times and again all we can do for him is just fight because we want to give it to him because that’s what he needs right now.

“He knows how much he could help us. We honor the decision and live by it. We respect the decision. Again, I am only speaking as a parent to a child and not to be with one of their children, one of their children, is very difficult for a coach, especially now ”.
