The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the toll concessionaires signed an agreement to test the interoperability of the latter’s cashless systems.
In a statement Monday, the DOTr said that SMC TPLEX Corp. (SMCTC), Metro Pacific Tollways Corp. (MPTC) and NLEX Corp. (NLEX) signed the memorandum of understanding for such a measure last Friday.
“We need your help to accelerate the steps necessary to fully implement toll interoperability,” Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade said, quoted in the statement.
SMCTC, a unit of San Miguel Holdings Corp., and the operator of the Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union highway, uses the AutoSweep radio frequency identification (RFID) tag.
The Pangilinan-led MPTC, meanwhile, uses the EasyTrip RFID tag for its North Luzon Expressway and Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway.
The test, which will be carried out through these highways, aims to determine the percentage of the reading rate or the performance of the system.
This would last 14 consecutive days with 45 vehicles, DOTr said.
The implementation of a complete cashless system on Luzon’s toll roads has been in full swing since last week. While this is the case, the RFID adhesive lanes will remain even beyond the transition period, from December 1, 2020 to January 11, 2021.
