World No. 1 e-kata athlete James De los Santos captured three gold medals in one day, improving his medal collection this month to 10, and 29 overall since joining the events in April.
De los Santos, 30, dominated the ENDAS International Karate Cup in Rome, captured his second at the European Grand Prix and then capped the day with a third consecutive mint at the E-Karate Games.
He won against Alfredo Bustamante in the final of the ENDAS International Karate Cup in Rome, 25.1-25, he beat Matias Moreno Domont in the 2nd European Grand Prix and defeated Silvio Cerone-Biogioni in the 3rd E-Karate Games.
De los Santos, a former member of the national team, won the first leg of the E-Karate Games in August and the second leg in October, while victory in the first European Grand Prix came in November.
“It was exhausting having three tournament finals in one day,” De los Santos said when contacted by Manila Newsletter.
“But I really had to push myself to do my best in every performance … because every tournament counts. It’s surprising to me that I was able to score three gold medals in one day for the first time.
“I could say it’s a personal record for me,” added De los Santos, who hopes to hold the top spot until the end of the year, which could give him additional awards from the World Karate Federation.
Over the weekend, De los Santos won the third stage of the 2020 Venice Cup.
So far, he has won 10 tournaments this month, including the 4th Katana Intercontinental League, the Golden League, the Athletes E-Tournament Cash Award 2, the NOX Dojo Markham City Open, and the Okinawa World Series 2.
At the ENDAS International Karate Cup in Rome, he reached the final after a dominant performance in the quarterfinals where he defeated Christian Stengl of Germany 24.8.21.3, and Davide Zompa of Italy in the semifinal 24.6-23.
Only the results were available online at the E-Karate Games and the Euro Grand Prix.
