TNT is off to a hot 3-0 start in the PBA Philippine Cup restart inside Clark’s bubble, but one can’t just overlook how Blackwater has fared during its first three games.
Now managed by Nash Racela, the former Tropang Giga head coach, Blackwater is slowly developing its own identity as a team.
Veteran wingman KG Canaleta noted that Racela’s unique approach has worked well for the Elite.
“With coach Nash, this team is different. The combination of veterans and younger guys, well the chemistry looks good,” Canaleta told ESPN5.com, shortly after Blackwater posted a 98-88 win over NLEX. winless for his second win in three attempts.
Canaleta added that Racela’s fluid style has allowed each player to contribute in various departments.
“Coach Nash just lets us play our game as long as you are responsible. And that has increased our confidence,” he said. “It’s a great feeling to play with him.”
Canaleta played his best game yet in the bubble against the Road Warriors after shooting 18 points, plus seven rebounds and two blocks. After making just two 3s in his first two outings, Canaleta scored four 3s in his win against NLEX.
At 38, Canaleta still manages to average 21.3 minutes, but emphasized that he religiously attended the team’s Zoom workout during the long break and monitored his diet.
With rookie Maurice Shaw one of the two legitimate big men on the team, Canaleta is happy to see everyone contribute in the rebounding department.
“We are doing a good job recovering basketball, although if you look at our lineup, we are not a great team,” Canaleta said. “We’re just helping each other to rebound. In fact, even our guards are doing their part in rebounding and that’s really a team effort.”
Mac Belo, Roi Sumang and Don Trollano have been the go-to guys on the team, along with Ed Daquioag. Interestingly, Blackwater appears to make its sharp rise during the third quarter, churning out 41, 39 and 35 scores in its first three games.
“If you look at our game, we have flowed and the players just react to the situation. And for me, that has been the key to our two wins.
Blackwater’s next three games starting on Tuesday will definitely put the team’s character to the test as the Elite take on the Alaska Aces on Tuesday, followed by league leader Tropang Giga on Thursday and Rain or Shine next Sunday. .
