In order for grandmaster Wesley So to realize his dream of becoming a world champion in the future, he must overcome the biggest name in chess – Magnus Carlsen.
So he faces Carlsen once again, this time in the final set of the Chess24 Banter Series on Wednesday.
So the former number one player from the Philippines who now represents the United States, crushed former Webster University teammate Le Quang Liem of Vietnam, 6-3, to stage a title showdown with Carlsen.
Meanwhile, Carlsen turned down Armenian bet Levon Aronian, 5.5-2.5, for the other spot in the final.
It will be a match between two giants, with Carlsen, the reigning standard, fast and blitz world champion, taking on So, the Fischer Random champion.
The tournament, however, applies a blitzkrieg format (three minutes, two second increment) that should give Carlsen the big advantage.
Interestingly, both So and Carlsen finished co-champions of the Saint Louis Rapid and Blitz tournament a week ago.
The winner of this event will receive US $ 12,000 (PhP600,000), while the finalist wins US $ 6,000 (P300,000) as consolation.
And if So were to eventually surprise Carlsen, his attempt to steal the world classic title in the next championship cycle would be closer to reality.
