They capture 35 members of an armed group in San Mateo, Rizal

MANILA, Philippines – Thirty-five members of an illegal armed group claiming to be part of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) were arrested in a joint operation by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) in San Mateo, Rizal.

A report from the Philippine Army (AP) last Saturday said the joint operation was carried out on December 20 after receiving reports of the presence of an illegal armed group in Upper Patiis in San Mateo’s Barangay Guinayang.

The operation, led by the Rizal Provincial Police Office and the 80th Infantry Battalion, arrested nine women and 26 men, for various violations, including the illegal possession of firearms and failure to cooperate with quarantine protocols.

Authorities also seized a variety of weapons and ammunition from the suspects: a .45-caliber Armscor pistol with two magazines, loaded with 18 rounds, a .45-caliber Shooters pistol with four magazines loaded with 22 rounds.
four shotgun shells, five portable communication radios, a jungle knife, and various military-type uniforms.

The Army said that those arrested will face charges for violating Republic Law No. 11332 or the Law on Compulsory Notification of Reportable Diseases and Health Events of Public Health Concern, in line with the pandemic; and for violating RA 10591 or the Law for the Comprehensive Regulation of Firearms and Ammunition.

The 25 nipa huts used by the arrested suspects were also destroyed by barangay officials and other San Mateo provincial government personnel.
