Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said Tuesday that there is still no formal order to stop work on the Skyway extension project after Saturday’s fatal accident involving a steel beam.
Bello made the clarification amid reports of an alleged work stoppage to give way to the investigation, as mentioned by the spokesman for the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), Rolly France, in a press conference on Monday.
“Yes,” Bello said in an ANC interview when asked if he was implying that the reports of the work stoppage are somehow inaccurate.
“In fact, I am still waiting for the report or the result of the investigation. And based on the report, I will give order, “he added.
Bello said the report from the concerned regional director and executive director of the DOLE Center for Occupational Safety and Health just arrived in his office Tuesday morning.
Bello said he expected work on the project to continue Tuesday.
France previously said that the order issued to the contractor EEI Corp. and its subcontractors came from the DOLE-National Capital Region.
However, Bello said he will review the report’s recommendations.
On Saturday, one person died and four others were injured after a steel bar from the ongoing project fell on six vehicles in the city of Muntinlupa. The accident happened on East Service Road.
The incident delayed the completion of the project until February 2021.
San Miguel Corp. president and chief operating officer Ramón Ang also issued a personal apology for the incident and promised to provide assistance to the victims.
The extension project was initially scheduled for completion in December of this year, adding two lanes to the north and three lanes to the south. –KBK, GMA News
