Denice “The Menace” Zamboanga and her brother Drex Zamboanga scored two victories in ONE: A New Breed at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand, on Friday night.
Denice, 23, beat national judo champion Watsapinya Kaewkhong of Thailand by submission using an AL shoulder block with 1:28 to play in the first round of their untitled atomweight matchup.
The fight was Kaewkhong’s debut in mixed martial arts.
“I’m so happy I finished it in the first round via submission because it’s the first time I’ve finished the fight. [that way] in ONE Championship, ”Denice said, adding that she hopes things will be back to normal soon so she can have a title shot.
Denice, with an impeccable 8-0 record, is eager to fight ONE atomweight world champion Angela Lee, a Canadian American. The Filipino wrestler won a unanimous decision over Mei Yamaguchi at One: King of the Jungle last February in Singapore.
Denice’s older brother Drex, a former Universal Reality Combat Championship bantamweight champion, made a victorious debut in ONE flyweight division.
Drex put Thai Detchadin Sornsirisupathin to sleep with a naked rear choke at the 4:58 mark of the second round. He improved his win-loss record to 9-5 while Sornsirisupathin dropped to 8-6.
“I am very grateful that I won this fight and that my brother also won his fight. I am very grateful to have both won on the same card because it is their debut. So I’m very happy, ”Denice said.
“We always take care of ourselves since we started training. He is my personal trainer, coach and my closest brother ”.
The Zamboangas have been training in Thailand since March at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Meanwhile, Filipino-American KC Carlos (17-13-1 record in wins, losses and draws) lost to Wondergirl Fairtex (34-16-2) of Thailand in a Muay Thai strawweight battle by TKO in the second round.
In the main event of the night, ONE Super Series rookie Allycia Hellen Rodrigues of Brazil was declared the ONE Atomic Weight Muay Thai World Champion after achieving an unexpected victory against now former Stamp Fairtex World Champion of Thailand by a decision closed.
In other fights, Thai Rodlek PK. Saenchai Muaythaigym defeated his compatriot Kulabdam Sor. Jor. Piek Uthai by unanimous decision in the Muay Thai bantamweight final. In the Muay Thai flyweight class, Cambodian Sok Thy scored a knockout victory at the 2:52 mark of the first round against Vietnamese Huang Ding. Meanwhile, Thai Yodkaikaew “Y2K” Fairtex won by TKO at the 1:21 mark of the third round against American Alex Schild in an MMA match.
