Volvo Cars has unveiled a new tool that the Swedish manufacturer considers the “ultimate driving simulator”. Thanks to augmented reality, it can be used to recreate any driving scenario, on any model. But what makes this system truly original is that it can record all the driver’s reactions, in particular thanks to a full-body suit that provides haptic feedback.

This simulator makes use of the latest video game technology, particularly when it comes to hardware, including a movable driver’s seat, a full-body suit, and a steering wheel that provides haptic feedback, and a Varjo virtual reality headset. The system uses headphones to immerse drivers in highly realistic high definition 3D images.

As you drive, the Teslasuit overalls provide haptic feedback from the virtual world, while also monitoring bodily reactions. Information about the interactions between the driver and the vehicle can be used to help develop and refine new active safety features and driver assistance features. The technologies the automaker is testing can be tested in the simulator for quick results.

This unique simulator should contribute to technological advancement in the field of vehicle safety. Volvo Cars engineers can program you with infinitely customizable scenarios for use on a real test track or in the test lab, while using a real car and all in complete safety. This allows them to collect all kinds of data on the driver’s reactions. Scenarios can be based on existing models, as well as models and prototypes under development.

This type of simulator can be used to test a large number of solutions in a more cost-effective way than with real-world testing, all while reducing the risk of accidents.

Beyond Volvo engineers, the goal is that one day a wide range of people will use the simulator to help the automaker test and refine their choices. NVG
